Custom vertical slat panel surrounding the flush-mounted TV with fully concealed cabling. Integrated LED backlighting behind the slat frame. Floating shelves for equipment and styling
GOAL
Goal
To design and build a fully custom TV feature wall that integrates the television seamlessly into the architecture of the room
This project involved designing and building a fully custom TV feature wall from scratch in a residential living room. The goal was to transform a plain painted wall into a high-impact focal point that felt architectural, intentional, and integrated — not like a TV hanging on a wall, but like the wall was built around the television.

Starting Point
The room had strong bones: herringbone oak flooring, tall ceilings with original dentil crown molding, and painted wainscoting panels. The challenge was creating something that honored the classical character of the space while introducing a contemporary, moody aesthetic. The client wanted drama without clutter — no media console, no visible cables, no hardware.
Build Process
Wall preparation
Work began with the wall itself. The existing paneling was stripped back and repainted in a deep matte black, unifying the surface and letting the molding details recede into the background rather than compete with what was to come.
Structure & basemenet
Next came the structural phase: mounting the television flush to the wall and establishing the vertical positions of the floating shelves. These shelves — installed above and below the screen — serve a dual purpose: they provide a place for media equipment and decorative objects while also creating horizontal visual anchors that frame the TV zone.
The wooden slats
The defining element of the build is the custom vertical slat panel. Dozens of narrow black wooden battens were cut to length and mounted in a grid formation surrounding the television, extending across the full width of the feature wall. The slats sit proud of the wall surface, creating depth and shadow that reads completely differently depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions.

LED strip lighting was then integrated behind the uppermost row of slats and along the base of the panel. When lit, the warm backlight bleeds through the gaps between battens, giving the wall a theatrical glow and eliminating any harsh contrast between the bright screen and the dark surround — a detail that also makes long viewing sessions significantly more comfortable.
The Result
The finished wall is clean, architectural, and deliberately cinematic. The slat panel absorbs the television into the design so completely that the screen feels like part of the wall rather than something mounted on it. The warm LED wash adds atmosphere without being decorative for its own sake. Against the herringbone floor and classical molding, the contrast between old and new reads as intentional rather than jarring.
