GOAL
Goal
Keep the style of the reference image and adapt it to the track vibe
The client, a YouTube creator specializing in "mystery and conspiracy" content, required a subtle yet jarring visual effect for a segment on reptilians. The goal was to seamlessly transition the host’s human eyes into reptilian eyes during a specific monologue beat to emphasize the narrative.
The Challenge
Micro-movements:
Maintaining a perfect lock on the pupils despite the host’s natural head shakes and blinks.
Eyelid Occlusion:
Ensuring the reptilian texture stayed "behind" the eyelids during blinks.
Lighting Integration:
Matching the studio’s ring light reflections (catchlights) so the eyes didn't look like flat stickers.
Technical Execution
Tracking with Mocha AE
Standard point tracking wasn't enough for the organic movement of the eyes. I used Mocha AE to perform planar tracking on the eye sockets. This allowed me to capture not just the position, but the slight rotation and perspective shifts as the host turned his head toward the camera.
Asset Design & Compositing
I created a custom reptilian iris texture featuring a vertical slit pupil and a high-contrast amber-and-gold color palette.
Parenting: The texture layers were parented to the Mocha tracking data.
Blending Modes: I used the 'Overlay' and 'Soft Light' blending modes to allow the natural highlights of the original eye to bleed through, maintaining the "wet" look of the eyeball.

The "Blink" Logic
To make the effect believable, I had to rotoscoped the upper and lower eyelids.
I used Mask Path keyframes to create a matte that hid the reptile eye whenever the host blinked.
A 2-pixel feather was applied to the masks to mimic the natural soft edge of an eyelid.

The Final Polish
Inner Glow: Added a faint internal glow to the iris to give it an "otherworldly" feel.
Mesh Warp: Used the Mesh Warp tool to slightly curve the flat texture, giving it the spherical distortion of a real eyeball.

The Result
The transition added a layer of high-production value that distinguished the channel from competitors in the niche.
